urdf
An agent skill by earthtojake, from earthtojake/text-to-cad. Tags: debugging, design, developer-tools, documentation, evaluation.
What it does
URDF robot description authoring and validation. Use when creating, editing, inspecting, validating, or debugging `.urdf` files, robot links, joints, limits, inertials, visual/collision geometry, mesh references, frame conventions, or robot-description artifacts. Use the SRDF skill for MoveIt2 semantic groups and IK/path-planning semantics; use the CAD skill for STEP/STL/3MF/DXF/GLB outputs.
Install
With the skills CLI, which installs into Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and other agents:
npx skills add earthtojake/text-to-cad --skill urdf
Or copy the skill folder into Claude Code's skills directory by hand (~/.claude/skills for every project, or .claude/skills inside one):
git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/earthtojake/text-to-cad
cp -r text-to-cad/skills/urdf ~/.claude/skills/urdf
Safety box score
Grade B, low risk: 21 of 100 risk points, rated 2026-10-14. The grade rates what the skill and its scripts can reach on the machine of whoever installs it, across eight categories from shell execution to secrets access. How the score works.
This skill authors and validates URDF robot-description files, mostly by editing local XML and inspecting local mesh assets. The main safety exposure is that it runs a pinned third-party `cadgen` tool via `uvx`, which downloads code and a headless browser on first use, while otherwise staying within the project tree.
| Category | Level | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Code & shell execution | 2 (moderate) | The workflow executes external tooling via `uvx --from cadgen==0.7.21 cadgen` and `uvx --from cadgen==0.7.21 python`, so it runs fetched code rather than only repo-local scripts. |
| Network access | 2 (moderate) | `SKILL.md` says the first run "downloads that installation and the first snapshot its headless browser," so the skill expects outbound network access. |
| Filesystem reach | 1 (low) | It edits local `.urdf` files directly and may keep helper scripts or mesh assets next to the model, but the documented scope is the workspace/project tree. |
| Secrets & credentials | 0 (none) | The files do not request API keys, passwords, `.env` contents, browser sessions, or other credentials. |
| Privilege & persistence | 0 (none) | There is no `sudo`, service installation, global config, or shell-startup modification in the reviewed files. |
| Instruction hijack surface | 0 (none) | The skill does not tell the agent to ignore instructions, skip confirmations, or follow remote prompt text. |
| Irreversible actions | 0 (none) | It validates and edits URDFs, but it does not push, deploy, publish, message, pay, or book anything. |
| Transparency | 1 (low) | The actual validator/viewer runtime is fetched outside the repo through `uvx --from cadgen==0.7.21`, so some executed code is not inspectable in these files. |
Before installing
- Read `SKILL.md` Setup and confirm you accept `uvx --from cadgen==0.7.21` downloading and executing `cadgen` plus a headless browser.
- Try `cadgen doctor <skill-dir>` in a scratch workspace before using it on important files.
- Verify your URDF and mesh files live only in the intended project tree and that any `package://` paths resolve as expected.
- If you plan to use helper scripts, inspect them first; they are optional but can execute arbitrary local code.
